Webster Leiden Campus, nestled in the heart of Europe, consistently provides opportunities for students to grow academically, socially and professionally, evident through multiple student-led clubs, including the International Relations Club-Webster (IRCW).

In a briskly globalizing world, comprehending international relations is no longer an option — it is a necessity. The IRCW exemplifies this belief. With a vision “to be the leading campus club that shapes informed global citizens” and a mission “to foster a deeper understanding of global affairs and international relations among campus students,” IRCW has established a platform for students to engage in complex global affairs — meaningfully. Through interactive discussions and debates, panel discussions and networking opportunities, students have developed a more profound comprehension of international affairs and fostered cross-cultural communication skills essential to navigating and thriving in the contemporary interconnected world.

The IRCW is more than a social gathering of like-minded students; it is a dynamic hub for exploration, growth and a practical world learning environment where international affairs and issues are debated, dissected and comprehended from distinct perspectives. Commitment to welcoming students from diverse backgrounds is a stand-out feature for IRCW. Integrating students pursuing international relations as a major or minor or someone interested in learning more about international affairs is at the club's core. This diversity and inclusiveness enrich the quality of the discussions and reflect Webster Leiden's global nature.

IRCW Activities

One of the club's underlying strengths is its wide range of educating and empowering activities designed to challenge and engage students or its members. These activities trigger students’ curiosity about global topics and help them foster skills essential to their future careers in diplomacy, global policy and international law.

Panel discussions and debate

One of the club’s hallmarks is participating in and hosting panel and debate discussions on contemporary global issues ranging from human rights to democracy. The events habitually feature prominent speakers, including diplomats, academic professionals, industry professionals and alumni, who offer expert insights that enhance students’ learning experience. These event sessions are not just about winning arguments — students get to apply critical thinking skills and sharpen their public-speaking abilities.

Collaborative events

Members of IRCW actively participate in other projects, locally and internationally, including the Model United Nations (MUN) and SIR Eta Alpha (part of the Sigma Lota Rho Honor Society for International Studies at Webster University). MUN is a simulation of the UN where students take on the roles of diplomatic representatives of various countries working together to resolve global challenges. Participation in the MUN is not only fun, but also allows students to acquire a deeper understanding of the intricacies of international diplomacy, negotiation tactics and multilateral cooperation. It also equips students with valuable teamwork and leadership skills fundamental in today's globalized world. For four years, Webster Leiden students have organized successful MUNWeb events, attracting students from other European universities and participating in other MUN conferences across Europe.

Field/Study Trips

Understanding global affairs goes beyond theoretical knowledge. Recognizing the significance of experimental learning, IRCW, in partnership with the International Relations Department, often arranges study visits to international organizations, museums and embassies within Europe. These excursions provide students with an invaluable opportunity for real-world insights into international relations action at the institutional level. The trips also offer a prospect to network with professionals in the field.

Looking ahead: Future goals and ambitions

The IRCW is poised to expand its role in preparing students to navigate these complexities as the world faces unprecedented confrontations- ranging from geopolitical tensions to environmental crises. One of the club’s fundamental goals is to expand its membership and increase student engagement across campus. It aims to become a central platform where all students from different academic backgrounds can come together to discuss international issues freely, reflecting the diverse perspectives of the campus community. Other key goals include;

The club intends to strengthen its partnerships with other campus clubs, alumni working in international relations-related fields, and international institutions. By establishing these connections, IRCW hopes to have joint events and internship opportunities, among other things, giving students access to global resources and networking opportunities.

In conclusion, the IRCW Leiden Campus is more than just a student organization or an extracurricular group; it is a gateway to understanding the world's complexities. The club remains dedicated to educating and empowering the next generation of international leaders by fostering understanding, collaboration and active participation in international relations.
