Webster University, a worldwide institution, ensures high-quality learning experiences that transform students for global citizenship and individual excellence.
Our vision is to be a premier U.S-based international university setting a distinct standard for global education. This vision is built on a foundation of excellence in teaching and enhanced by an international perspective that fosters dialogue, respect and understanding across boundaries and between peoples.
The educational endeavors in support of this vision are meeting the needs and enriching a global mix of learners within an ever-increasing network of students desiring a U.S. education in multiple parts of the world. The institution is committed to offering these students a distinct personal experience and building the resources required to achieve this vision. The actions of the institution are shaped by our core values.
Celebrating A Century of Academic Excellence
In 1915, the Sisters of Loretto had a bold vision of establishing a university that would admit and educate only women. Opening with five students, the institution’s first graduating class totaled just two women.
Today our community looks quite different than it did more than a century ago—and even different from when it was renamed Webster University in 1983.
Now, the University engages thousands of individuals living and working worldwide, honoring our legacy in the pursuit of academic excellence, equality and global citizenship.
Accreditations and Academic Quality Assurance
Webster University carries full institutional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The HLC is the highest-level accrediting agency for universities based in the United States’ north-central region.
We’ve maintained this accreditation since 1925, and this institutional accreditation applies to all locations where the University offers programs worldwide. Therefore, students at Webster Athens earn the same degree as their American peers in the United States.
Webster Leiden is a recognized institute of higher education under Dutch law.
The Examination Board, consisting of teaching faculty, is governed by Dutch law, WHW article 7.12. The Exam Board as an independent body determines the policies related to the examination procedures. The Board is responsible for determining, in an objective and professional manner, whether a student meets the conditions with respect to the knowledge, insight and skills required to obtain a degree.
The Board appoints examiners and can give directions for the assessment of the examinations. The Exam Board approves the transfer credits (“vrijstellingen”) that individual students can apply to their major. Currently the Exam Board consists of two faculty members per department, an external member (from Regent’s University, London UK), and a non-voting secretary.
The Leiden Exam Office assists and facilitates the Board. The Exam Office assists faculty by electronically collecting all written work weighted at 20% or more. Students submit this type of work to the Exam Office, not to instructors. The Exam Office staff checks whether the papers were submitted before the required deadline (announced in the course syllabus) and sends the students’ work to the appropriate instructor for grading.
Students’ work may be graded down or rejected if submitted after the deadline (this policy is posted in all syllabi). Instructors return the graded scripts (with feedback) within one or two weeks to the Exam Office which in turn distributes them back to the students. All student work may be (spot-)checked for plagiarism using Turnitin.com. and is archived electronically.
Our University stands out as one of the few institutions with its own network of campuses in cities on four continents and has a unified academic experience in all locations. The course catalog and the credit system are the same wherever one studies in our network.
Studying abroad allows students to fully immerse themselves in a new culture and language, as well as new ways of thinking. The decision to study abroad can be one of the most positive life-changing experiences one can make. Students returning home after their time abroad exhibit an enhanced sense of self-confidence and are ultimately better equipped for life after university.
Our University’s main campus is in Webster Groves, located in St. Louis, Missouri. The campus is set in a sprawling park and offers state-of-the-art amenities and facilities. There are additional locations and sites in 22 states and 50 cities.
